Genital Acne Is For Real
by Rose Lindy
Hidradenitis Suppurativa is actually genital acne and yes, it does happen. Many people are unaware that this even exists so it is important to know what it is and where it occurs because genital acne could be a symptom of a larger problem and you will see later in this article. As with regular acne there are certain precautions you can take to get this condition under control and prevent further recurrence.
How Can You Tell It Apart From Regular Acne?
Well the medical explanation is that the acne we are used to seeing on the face, is caused by the sebaceous glands. Genital acne is caused by the apocrine glands which is a completely different set of glands and are located in the groin area, under your arms and nipples. Perspiration can sometimes block these glands or the other culprit can be underdeveloped apocrine glands. Therefore when materials become trapped inside these glands and cannot get outside the body they end up being forced out into the tissues that surround the blocked glands. The end result can be a painful infection and inflammation surrounding the area of infection that sometimes causes lesions to appear on the surface of the skin.
There are other things which can cause irritation and add to this condition. Too tight clothing should be avoided because it is constantly rubbing against you skin. This can block the glands. Laundry detergents and body soap can also add to this condition. If you are suffering from genital acne you should stop wearing tight clothes and if that does not help, switch your laundry detergent and body soap, you may get some relief by just doing these two simple things.
Should You See a Doctor
If the acne is not going away and especially if the lesions are on the genital organs then you need to see your doctor. You should be aware the genital acne lesions can be a symptom of an STD, sexually transmitted disease. If this is the case then your acne is not being caused by blocked glands. Even if you are embarrassed to go to your doctor about this problem, you need to put that aside and get treatment. Remember that there is nothing your doctor has not seen before so do not worry about the embarrassment, just make sure to get diagnosed correctly and get treatment.
Obviously a mild case of Hidradenitis Suppurativa is easier to treat. Try switching to loose fitting clothing. Also be diligent at keeping the affected area clean. This means making sure that you are using an antiseptic or hydrogen peroxide to clean the bacteria away. Any lesions that are painful or have discharge could be infected so if that is the case, you need to go to your doctor to get an antibiotic.
After you get this under control just making a few easy changes to your cleaning routine can do wonders to keep from getting any recurring bouts of genial acne. You can even try gently exfoliating the affected area. This will help remove dead skin cells. Also, be sure to use a mild cleanser to avoid any unnecessary irritation.
